A Decade of Dominance

Hall of Fame NFL coach, Bill Walsh experienced great success on the football field and his 10 years with the San Francisco 49ers undoubtedly made him one of the greatest coaches of all time.



Why?

* He was named the NFL's Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1984;

* He won three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers;

* He drafted great players like Joe Montana, Ronnie Lott and Jerry Rice proving that he had an eye for talent;

* But most importantly, he had a heart for people and recognized that they were an important part of an organization's success.

Steve Jamison, co-author of Bill's latest book "The Score Will Take Care of Itself" comes back to the program to talk about this extraordinary coach and what made him successful as a leader.



As Steve puts it, Bill's leadership ability to get "buy-in" from his teams was advanced.

He also understood that the skills needed to be successful could be applied to the business community, the football field and life.

Making You Greater

When 11 all-star centre, Shaquille O'Neal was traded to the Miami Heat at the end of the 2004-2005 season, the former first round draft pick made two promises to Heat fans.

He committed to help the franchise win its first championship title and he vowed to do everything in his power to make their young star player, Dwayne Wade an even better player.

Shortly after being traded Shaq said during an ESPN interview,`I want to make him the best guard in the Eastern conference, no forget that, I want to make him the best guard in the game.`

The Big Aristotle took all his knowledge and experience from his championship title days in LA and poured them into the guy he nicknamed, Flash.

Shaq made good on his promises as the Miami Heat became the eventual champions and through the process, Flash was the Finals MVP.




O`Neal may not have realized this but he had subscribed to a leadership philosophy simply encapsulated in three simple letters.

The Greater Than Yourself concept is based on the premise that great leaders become great because they cause others to be greater than they are.

It`s also the title of Steve Farber`s book.



Steve Farber is a leadership expert, author, speaker and guest on the next episode of HCL Radio.

Leading From The Front

I think Nobel prize winner and American physicist Albert Einstein got it right when he said,

"Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means.”



There's no doubt that setting an example is one of the most effective ways a leader can create commitment amongst their people.

It's not about leading through words and telling others the way things should be, rather it's by demonstrating how you want others to behave through action.

"Leading From the Front" has many benefits including:

* Helps a leader build trust amongst his/her people;
* Provides opportunities for leaders to demonstrate how they want things done;
* Creates an infectious feeling with team members

Look at it this way.

If the 12th best player on a basketball team sees the leader whether it be Kobe Bryant, LeBron James or Michael Jordan putting in extra practice time by coming in early and staying late, they can't help but to be influenced to work as just as hard, if not harder.



That's why it's so important for leaders to remember the importance of leading by example.

On the next episode of HCL Radio, I'm joined by internationally recognized leadership consultant, coach, and author of "Lead By Example" - Mr. John Baldoni.



John makes it quite clear that leaders need to keep in mind the importance of setting the proper example to achieve success. John said, "Leaders do what's necessary for the good of the organization".

If CEO's and managers expect to lead their teams successfully and achieve organizational results, they need to realize that setting an example and leading from the front is the first step in making that happen.

Happy Birthday Coach!

On Oct 14, 2009, the Greatest Coach of All Time, John Wooden turns 99 years young.



Not only was he the most successful coach in UCLA history but he also spent an entire lifetime developing players into respectable and responsible contributors to our society.

His invaluable lessons as a teacher and a coach have touched and inspired many.

HERE'S WHAT YOU CAN DO

Building A Magical Team

Having a team working together and collaborating is a fabulous way of achieving results. The determining factor really comes down to how well individual team members can co-exist and function together.

When a group isn't on the same page, you have nothing but a collective mess.

However, a well functioning team working together in unison is like a finely tuned machine producing remarkable results.

Orlando Magic Senior VP, Pat Williams really hammers this point home in his latest book, Extreme Dreams Depend on Teams.




Afterall, he'd know better than anyone else.

As co-founder of the Magic, Pat was instrumental in working with his team to bring an NBA franchise to a city that didn't have a sports arena to play in or no history of pro sports of any kind.

Their economy primarily consisted of oranges and Walt Disney.



Pat said, "You just can't do it individually, it's gotta be done as a unit. We've gotta understand how to build teams and act in a sense of collaboration."

Pat joins the next episode of HCL Radio and further elaborates on the importance of teams working together.

Bridging The Divide

Our current workplace is very different today then it was a few years ago. There's a wider range of age groups with differing attitudes, values, and motivators working together on the same team.

Inter-generational interactions are common in the workplace and we're starting to see much more attention paid to this as analysts are studying how to make it all work.



With so much talk spent on the issues related to this new workforce, it's really easy to get caught up and overlook the fact that what we're really talking about how we get people of diverse backgrounds and interests to co-exist and function as a team.

Clearly, a non functioning team is an ineffective one whether it's in the workplace or the basketball court.

Getting people from different backgrounds on the same page is a clear and recognizable issue to many so I've called on the services of Dr. Graeme Codrington to help us make sense of it all on the next edition of HCL Radio.
